If you have an old consumer unit it may not be able to handle all the demands put on it especially if you are adding to the circuits. Most additions to circuits now will require RCD, earth fault protection, as meeting the wiring depth in walls is very difficult and in a lot of cases impossible. Also it is a must where cables enter or pass through a special area (i.e. Bathroom or Shower room) With a new 18th edition consumer unit all circuits (where applicable) will be protected by an RCBO which combines earth fault and overload protection.
